Chiffon Cake – Lil Red Dot’s National Cake

on May 5, 2017

Last Sunday our national newspaper featured this and I thought it would be useful to show you how the cake looks like as a whole.

As I read the statistics of how many tourists from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan and so on would make a bee line to local bakery chain Bengawan Solo to buy this as gifts to take home, I was amazed at the importance of this little cake of ours.

I remember how this cake was made famous by Bengawan Solo as the owner, a woman started her business from her humble kitchen in the east of Singapore.

Her bake sales got so good that the neighbors complained of the daily aromas from her flat.

I guess her neighbors got tired of the free smells and began to feel that their flats and clothes smelt of her cake.

The rest is history as the agency regulating food sales stepped in and she was forced to take the plunge as a business woman.

She opened her flagship store at Marine Parade and soon more outlets opened.

Today with more than 30 outlets islandwide, her production is done in Malaysia and trucked daily to Singapore.

She made this cake known and soon others followed suit.

Begawan Solo retains her crown for being the best seller as she is the authentic front runner.
